In the WFH age, many teams find the collaboration process difficult, but virtual whiteboards can help make online work feel slightly alien for those that are used to doing regular brain dumps with coworkers.
The leader in the virtual whiteboard space is definitely Miro at this point in time. They have the best UI and collaboration experience of any virtual whiteboard tool I’ve used. While Miro has a great free plan, most team collaboration will require a monthly subscription before long.
Collaboard is an interesting alternative that is offering a one-time payment on the AppSumo platform that on the surface checks (nearly) all my boxes for the type of tool I look for as a one-time payment solution:
- Uni-tasker: It solves one problem without being an integral link in my tech stack. If my whiteboard vanished overnight it would certainly be an inconvenience, but not a show stopper for my business.
- Sustainable business model: The server costs for hosting whiteboard software aren’t zero, but they’re a lot less than a website host or an asset management tool. I prefer one-time purchases for self-hosted software, but this type of tool is the next best thing.
- A new product from a reputable company: I don’t like investing in software from developers who just made the first beta of their first product. I don’t want to pay to be a beta tester. Collaboard is from Swiss software company IBV which has been around for nearly 40 years.
